Ever since Microsoft announced that its exclusive RPG Scalebound was canceled, the exclusives lineup for Xbox One has been looking kind of bleak for this year. So far, 2017 is a far cry from 2016 which saw many exclusives top the charts. One of the ones on the list is Phantom Dust, which is being remade from the original Xbox version.
With only a 2017 release window known so far, a fan asked Phil Spencer on Twitter if he knew when we could expect it. His response was exciting, as he indicated that he wants it released prior to E3 in June.
The original Phantom Dust released on Xbox nearly 12 years ago in March 2005. It was one of the system's best exclusives and has had sort of a cult following ever since. It's been two and a half years since Microsoft announced the remake at E3 2014, and we've heard little about it since. Back during E3 2015, it was announced that it was no longer in active development, but still being worked on and it again missed the cut at E3 2016.
With next to nothing to go on, and not even a trailer or screen shots revealed yet, releasing the game prior to E3 is pretty huge news for Microsoft. If they are able to pull this off, this means we should be in for a trailer sometime in the very near future. Phantom Dust was being made by Darkside Studios before the studio closed when Microsoft halted the game's development and reopened it as an in-house exclusive.
In case you need a refresher about the game's premise, Phantom Dust is a mix between a third person shooter and card game. You build up skills from several hundred possibilites, and use them to combat other players with a character that can use the dust that covers the Earth as a weapon. The original game allowed up to four players to compete against each other at once, but no information has been announced on this remake's capabilities.
