Phil Spencer wants to preserve Backwards Compatibility for ‘as long as possible’

Xbox's Backwards Compatibility initiative has proven to be as significant as promised when it was first revealed back at E3 2015. Since then, many big games have steadily made their way into the program including the Mass Effect series and Red Dead Redemption. Although there's still much progress to be made on that front, Xbox Boss, Phil Spencer says he is committed to delivering on it into the future.

A lot of talk has been circling about the future of the Xbox brand, namely Project Scorpio with one developer claiming that the system is a "next-gen machine" capable of having your entire library be backwards compatible. One fan reached out to Spencer on Twitter to see if he could offer any insight into the future of backwards compatibility, and naturally, he had an answer.

Here's the tweet:

Yeah, it might be a bit noncommittal, but people in Spencer's position have to be very careful with promises as (unlike what many fans believe) many things are much easier said than done. Backwards Compatibility still hasn't even hit the peak of what it could be, so expecting the world and then some at this juncture is a recipe for disappointment.

It's going to take time, but there is at least hope that your console games won't eventually be trapped on an aging machine. Unless of course, you find yourself a good ROM program, that is.
