Back in the 90s and early 2000s, there was an attraction at Walt Disney World Resort's EPCOT theme park called Cranium Command. Located inside the Wonders of Life pavillion, the attraction was a show that offered a humorous presentation of the importance of the human brain and how parts of the body react to every day situations. The theater was designed to represent the inside of the human head, with video screens acting as eyes to the outside world. The show basically took the audience through a typical day of a twelve-year-old; waking up, skipping breakfast, running to school, meeting a cute girl; participating in a food fight; and all sorts of events that have an impact on the various organs of the body. It was one of my favorite attractions at the theme park, but sadly, it was permanently closed in January 2007.
That's why I'm incredibly excited for Pixar's new animated film, Inside Out, which is basically a full length movie that embodies the spirit of Cranium. A new trailer for the upcoming movie was released today, giving us a more in-depth look at the movie's premise which officially reads:
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
Just judging by this two-minute trailer, you can tell that Inside Out is going to be an emotional rollercoaster that at some point will have you in tears — both from laughter and sadness. Curse you Pixar, why must you always tug on my heart strings.
Inside Out is set to hit theaters on June 19.
