When checking out a Pixar movie you're pretty much guaranteed two things: a decent flick, and an amazing short that plays before it. Pixar has made quite a name for themselves with their brief short films. In fact, they are so well-received that Disney has released them as boxed DVD sets. In some cases, I'd argue that the shorts are sometimes better than the actual film itself — which isn't a knock on the feature film, but more of a testament to the work of the team that worked on the short.
Recognizing the popularity of these shorts (I'm sure there are some that go to Pixar films just to see these brief clips), Disney has released a first-look teaser of the new short, titled Blue Umbrella. The teaser was posted to The Wall Street Journal and, like all of Pixar's other work, looks pretty darn good.
The brief 30-second teaser gives us an idea for what it's about: love at first site. A blue umbrella notices a red umbrella and is immediately attracted; however, distance and forces of nature keep the two separated. Like Paperman before Wreck-It Ralph taught us, nothing can keep love apart, and the objects on the street come to life to help the two umbrellas reunite. As expected, it looks charming and simply adorable. It amazes me that in a couple of minutes, Pixar can tell a better love story than Twilight in several painfully bad films.
Blue Umbrella will air before Pixar's new feature film Monsters University, the prequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc. Monsters University is set to release in theaters on June 21, 2013. Check out the brief teaser below and let us know what you think.
