It's a big week for Daybreak Game Company's MMO shooter PlanetSide 2 on PlayStation 4. Coinciding with this week's massive content update is a shift to the next phase of beta.
For starters, this means a new download will be available for North American players tomorrow, March 24, following the PSN Store maintenance.
"The new beta will require a full download, which I know is frustrating, but it’s something that we needed to do. Fortunately, we anticipate only needing to do patches/updates after that; even after the full release of the game," said PlanetSide 2 Director of Development Andy Sites. The download is approximately 10GB "due to the fact that we’re adding 3 additional continents and a ton of other features/content." That being said, you should be able to login to the game after the first 5GB are downloaded; you'll be able to create a new character — which will be required for everyone, regardless if you've played in phase 1 — and begin playing while the remaining portion is being downloaded.
A new beta key will also be required for both new and existing players; however, if you've already received a key for the previous phase of the beta, you should automatically receive a new key on Tuesday.
"For players that received keys via streams, social media, etc, and you do not receive a key on Tuesday, we will do our best to ensure you’re provided a new key. After a day or so of monitoring the initial onslaught of players, we will resume sending keys out to new players," Sites assured.
Looking ahead, Daybreak plans to expand upon the previous 3pm-9pm daily server schedule, with hours based on player activity/server populations. "Since access isn’t open to everyone, it’s critical that we keep the populations above a certain threshold to gather the feedback we need and assure that players are having the best gaming experience. So if we see a lot of activity happening up until 9pm, we will likely extend it," Sites said.
From a gameplay perspective, there's a ton of new content incoming which you can read more about here.
As a reminder for our friends over sea, the European beta is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 25. Make sure you sign up to participate here.
