Let me preface this by saying PlanetSide 2 looks really good on PlayStation 4 — like really good. I would know, I had the opportunity to play it on PS4 at E3 last week.
As I mentioned earlier this week in a status update of the game, SOE is working to make PlanetSide 2 feel like it was never a PC game, like it was always meant to be played on consoles. To that end, the company is working hard to deliver 1080p at a solid 60 frames per second.
"Right now we're running at 1080p," lead designer Luke Sigmund told me. "And our goal is always going to be 60 frames per second."
While the game looks nice and plays smoothly in its current form, Sigmund acknowledged they aren't at a solid 60 frames per second just yet. "We're close," he said. "We're between 50 and 60 [frames per second] right now. It's a little variable."
The reason for the variance, he explained, is actually the nature of the game's design. "We have a unique issue being that we can have a bunch of different size fights in the game," he said. "So you can have a battle of like 30 people, or you can have a battle with hundreds of people. So obviously with hundreds of people it's harder for us to keep the frame rate really solid. It will fluctuate somewhat, but we have smooth transitioning.
I played PlanetSide 2 for about 15 minutes and aside from a few hiccups in the UI, which SOE is currently working on, the game played fine. It felt natural which seems to be what SOE is honing in on. Unfortunately, PlanetSide 2 still doesn't have a release date for PS4, but SOE says a beta for it is "probably not too far off."
