PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds might be the most significant name to come out of 2017's game release calendar when all is said and done. No matter how you feel about the game, it's impossible to ignore the massive success the game has enjoyed on the scale it has. With the Xbox One release just weeks away, Brendan Greene (AKA PlayerUnknown) spoke with GamesTM (via WCCFTech) about releasing the game on Microsoft's console and revealed that the game would run at 60 FPS on Xbox One X.
"Xbox is synonymous with gaming; you know what I mean? And there’s a huge player base out there that prefer to play on console, so bringing it to the Xbox One systems is just great," he said. "It’s like I can finally say yup, I have a game on Xbox."
Greene said that the development team isn't concerning themselves with player counts much yet, outside of making sure their servers will be stable at launch. But the most important thing is that the game plays well, he says.
"So I think we could see incredible numbers on console, but again, I don’t want to jinx it. We’re more focused on getting a good game out. Like, as much as it sounds a bit shitty, we’re not focused on player numbers. Sure, from a server point of view we have to be, but that’s what our goal here is. It’s not to have millions of players, our goal is to put a good game onto both platforms."
Of course, it's worth pointing out that PUBG previously broke Steam's record for most concurrent users earlier this year, and is the only game on the platform to reach over 2 million simultaneous players. So of course, Bluehole doesn't need to concern themselves with the question of if players will come, it's more about how many will be there at launch.
On the subject of Xbox One X, Greene confirmed that PUBG would run at 60 FPS on Microsoft's beefed up console.
"Definitely on Xbox One X, 60 FPS," he said.
However, standard Xbox Ones are still up in the air, according to Greene.
"On Xbox One, we’re not sure. We may have to limit it at 30FPS, maybe, but the last time I saw it, it was running at about 30 to 40. We’re still constantly improving it so, you know, the aim is to get to 60. That’s why we’re doing Game Preview, because I think the great thing about console is it’s a locked hardware system, so we can do really specific tweaks that tune it for those systems."
Greene goes on to say that the "aim" is to get standard Xbox Ones to run at 60 FPS has "great faith" that it will happen.
"I have great faith that we’ll get there. The great thing about Battlegrounds is that it’s not…unlike the more high paced shooters, frame rate isn’t that important. Yes, it is important, but it’s not as important for us as it is in a twitch shooter. So we’re aiming for 60; not sure if we’ll get there, but that is our aim."
It's also worth noting that as far as the 4K textures go, both PC and Xbox One players will have to wait as they "don’t exist yet." It's unclear when PUBG will get 4K textures, but the game will release into the Xbox One Preview Program on December 12th, 2017.
