PlayStation 4 has now sold over 50 million units

The PlayStation 4 is one of the fastest selling consoles ever and is currently the best selling console of this generation. It continues to push units by releasing substantial new pieces of hardware like the PlayStation 4 Pro, Slim and the first console VR headset, PlayStation VR.

The system also has quite a few critically acclaimed games that people far and wide seem to love. PlayStation has also made some strategical deals to secure marketing rights and exclusive deals for a number of high profile IPs like Call of Duty.

All of this has helped the platform achieve a brand new milestone of 50 million consoles sold through to consumers. Black Friday helped contribute to this number as Sony reported that week was their best week in the history of the entire PlayStation brand.

"We're truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago," Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Andrew House said in a statement. "With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware, including the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro, and PlayStation VR. We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem."

The system has a strong future ahead of it with games like God of War 4, Insomnaic's untitled Spider-Man game, Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, and of course, The Last of Us Part 2 among many others. We aren't sure when many of these games are releasing but they are major IPs backed by some of the biggest developers.

It should be noted that Xbox One has been the best selling console for the last 4 months after three years of "playing catch up" due to a controversial launch.
