Today Sony has proclaimed that the PlayStation 4 has just exceeded 40 million units, making it the fastest selling console to date. In addition to hardware sales, Sony has also noted the console has sold more than 270.9 million copies of PS4 software (games), via both retail and digitally through the PSN.

"We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

With Sony's latest console, PS4, hitting such milestones so early in its lifetime, it  has a lot of people wondering the reason for the PS4 NEO. This next iteration of the PlayStation 4 is said to have 4K output while also bringing some extra juice to the PlayStation VR.

"We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services."

According to an unnamed source, the PlayStation 4 NEO is primarily for the PlayStation VR as the headset device will run horribly on a "launch PS4". Sony has yet to confirm any of these very well sourced rumors, but with E3 2016 around the corner, the veil will undoubtedly be lifted.
