The PlayStation 5 is out now but only mere hours after release, we’re getting reports of dead consoles. Users on Reddit and ResetEra are reporting issues of PlayStation 5 consoles not even beeping or flashing lights.
Reddit user Vantana said they played an hour of Astro’s Playroom before things went horribly wrong. The controller randomly disconnected and then refused to sync. Vantana then tried to power the PlayStation 5 down to troubleshoot but it got worse.
“I just pressed power again to turn it back on… at first it beeped once like it should… but then nothing else at all. No lights, no fan, nothing. It just beeped. I’ve unplugged it from the wall for a good half an hour and tried plugging it into a different wall socket, tried my old PS4 power cable, no good either. And it’s not even beeping now, it just seems completely dead.”
They then tried to contact support but have had trouble maintaining a connection to Sony’s support. ResetEra user Creepy Woody experienced a very similar issue. After playing Astro’s Playroom and installing other games, they turned it off for a bit. A few hours later, they came back and the PlayStation 5 refused to turn on. Their game disc for Spider-Man also became stuck inside of the console as a result of this. They attached a video with their post to show the deceased console.
In case there’s any question of validity, YouTuber ACG also reported their review PlayStation 5 died. It temporarily halted his review but a replacement console was sent to help get his coverage out.
Similar to ACG, Twitter user Shpeshal_Ed also got a corrupted database error. While his console still works, the error continues to appear repeatedly.

5th Database error. I’m yet to start a game. Hopefully it doesn’t happen during gameplay. It just happens at completely random times during menu scrolling and stuff.

If all reports are true, PlayStation 5 isn’t the only one with problems. Another ResetEra user is reporting their Series X died on them. Microsoft noted it to them as a “known issue”. There were also reports of “smoking Xboxes” but they’ve been pretty much debunked. The smoke effect was created by people blowing vapes into the console and it venting it out. There are some issues with the disc drive which cause it the console to be incredibly noisy.
We imagine the PlayStation 5 issues will only effect a small margin of players. These things do tend to happen with launch consoles as there are so many of them and they’re the first ones off the production line. If anything like this happens to you, reach out to Sony or your retailer to replace it.
We’ve reached out to Sony for comment and will update you if we hear anything. The PlayStation 5 is out now.
