Rumors have been swirling since the first big PlayStation 5 blowout as to when the next one would be. More and more reputable sources are continuing to suggest we’ll be getting a taste of next-gen this month.
Bloomberg, who has had the inside track on the PlayStation 5 for a while, is reporting that the next event is “tentatively scheduled” for August. Of course, nothing has been officially announced so this plan could change but the clock is ticking until launch. The PlayStation 5 is slated for release this holiday season and they’ll need to open pre-orders relatively soon. If history is worth listening to, the console will likely release in November.
Sony recently doubled the output for the PlayStation 5, expecting about 10 million units to be available around launch. Challenges with COVID-19 could slow that plan down but it seems Sony knows their console is in extremely high-demand. While no price has been announced, the cost to manufacture it is expected to be about $450/unit.
Sony is hosting a PlayStation State of Play later this week but it’ll focus on the PS4/PSVR line-up for the year. There will be a few updates on some PS5 titles but don’t expect any bombshells. You’ll probably see much more of that in the rumored event later this month.
The last PlayStation 5 event saw a lot of major announcements. We got the first look at the PlayStation 5 console which included a digital-only counterpart. Many games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Hitman 3, Resident Evil 8, and GTA V for next-gen were also showcased at the event. We’ll likely get hard dates for many of the console’s launch titles along with the console itself as we move into the final phase of the PS5 marketing cycle.
