This is not something I expected from a Supergiant game, but it looks like their upcoming project, Pyre will have at least somewhat of a focus on multiplayer. The game takes place in purgatory where the player leads a band of exiles through the land in a manner not unlike that of The Oregon Trail or The Banner Saga, as you tackle a series of challenges along your journey.
The trailer showcased at the PlayStation Experience media briefing, shows off exclusively multiplayer oriented gameplay where the object of the game is to snuff out the opposing player's Pyre. Now this isn't to say that the game itself will be exclusively multiplayer, but it does point to the possibility that Pyre's gameplay will be taking aspects of Sports genre games and applying them to Supergiant's RPG formula.
Supergiant Games' Creative Director, Greg Kasavin previously described "action-packed confrontations against rival groups of exiles whose own freedom is at stake" as a core part of the game's experience. IMO, this doesn't sound all that different from a sporting event.
It remains to be seen what else Pyre has in store for us, and we don't currently have a concrete release date. That said, Pyre is expected to ship sometime next year.
