PlayStation Experience 2016: The Last of Us Part 2 revealed with dark trailer

Update: We now have more details about the game straight from The Last of Us Part 2 panel at PlayStation Experience. We learned about who we'll be playing as, characters, the music, tone, and some plot elements. You can find it all by clicking right here.

Sony blew everyone away at E3 this year with games like Spider-Man, God of War, Death Stranding, and more, but they weren't going to let 2016 end without a few more amazing reveals.

At PlayStation Experience this morning, Sony revealed that Naughty Dog is indeed developing a sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, The Last of Us. The PlayStation 3 exclusive (later remastered for PS4) was Naughty Dog's first attempt at a dark and gritty game and was their first new IP since Uncharted began roughly 6 years prior.

The Last of Us was a different take on post-apocalyptic zombie-esque viruses and saw a world torn apart by monsters and society itself. Players were tasked with protecting a little girl named Ellie and escorting her across the country to a medical facility because she may be humanity's last chance of survival. As the game progresses, the main character, Joel, and Ellie bond and their relationship has gone down as one of the most iconic relationships in gaming. The game is brutal, emotional, and mortifying.

Fans have been dying for a sequel since 2013 but the team at Naughty Dog has been busy wrapping up Nathan Drake's story in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Now that that's out of the way, the team has begun development on the highly anticipated sequel.

The trailer shows a much older, battered Ellie playing the guitar in abandoned house while singing a song that seems to set the tone for the game. Joel then walks into the house and asks Ellie "Are you really going to go through with this?" and she replies with "I'm gonna find… and kill every… last one of them."

We have no idea what she's talking about but dark times are clearly ahead. You can view the trailer below.
