Back in 2011, Sony's PlayStation Network was attacked by digital hackers. The service was down for roughly a month meaning no one could play online or use any online services on their PlayStation 3. In addition to that, tons of accounts were compromised which lead to names, credit cards, and much more falling into the hands of nefarious people. The hack was a complete disaster for Sony and it hurt the launches of several games like SOCOM which relied heavily upon online , some even speculate that it damaged sales so bad that the studio was shut down.
Sony's film studio, Sony Pictures, was also the target of an attack a few years ago. The hack lead to tons of movies leaking online and various confidential emails discussing plans for the future of franchises like Spider-Man.
With all of that said, you'd think Sony would have the tightest security in the world but you'd be dead wrong. Yesterday, a "security group" by the name of OurMine hacked into PlayStation's Twitter and claimed that they had access to the PlayStation Network database. The mysterious group of hackers hasn't done anything malicious quite yet.
OurMine has hacked a handful of the biggest companies in the world including Netflix, Marvel, and even HBO. The group claims they won't leak anything and just want PlayStation to contact Ourmine presumably so they can either fix their security or so they can receive a bit of coin by holding a ton of information hostage.
HBO's hack was easily the worst. Tons of scripts and episodes for the premium TV channel's shows leaked online leading to a huge number of spoilers for Game of Thrones, they've even threatened to release the season finale online before it airs on TV. OurMine says they have no plans to do anything like that for PlayStation but only time will tell.
