Sony has announced today that PlayStation Home, the company's attempt at creating a social hub for PS3 gamers, will be closing down "due to a shifting landscape."
The long-running free social platform, which combined games with community in a Second Life-type setting, was an interesting experiment, but it never really took off the way Sony has probably originally envisioned. Now it appears they are ready to pull the plug for good.
PlayStation Home will cease publishing new content on November 12, 2014, although users in the U.S. and Canada will be able to download new content until December 3, 2014. Furthermore, as a thank you to its users, Sony will also be releasing a series of free content prior to PlayStation Home's final closure on March 31, 2015.
"We would like to thank all of our fans for their support of the PlayStation Home platform over the years," Sony wrote.
