PlayStation’s PSN finally catching up to Xbox’s account security

When it comes to account security, both PlayStation and Xbox users have seen what relaxed security will get you on a console. Most recently, we saw a PlayStation user locked out of their account after someone charged $75 on their account and Sony wouldn't reimburse them.

This is not an uncommon practice in the digital age of gaming, in fact, it is becoming more and more common. With the number of hacked accounts rising, Sony will be finally implementing a better authentication service for PlayStation Network users.

"In order to further safeguard our users and their accounts, we are preparing to offer a 2-step verification feature," a Sony representative said to Polygon.

Earlier this week, Sony updated the PS3's firmware giving some users the two-step verification experience. The new authentication process is not widely available across the PlayStation Network, however Sony did mention that "more details will be shared at a later date" in their statement to Polygon.

This feature has been available to Xbox users as of 2013.
