PlayStation VR is Getting a New Model, Here’s What Changes

Sony was the trailblazer for console-based virtual reality. The PlayStation VR may not have performed as well as many, including Sony, expected, but there are still some major pushes to make virtual reality more mainstream. The technology is there, but price and gameplay have always been the hurdles. Not one to give up, Sony has announced a new model for the PSVR headset.

The new line of headsets doesn't have any new huge features, but a number of small enhancements that may equate to a big change. It features "an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable." Additionally, the new headset's processor will support HDR pass-through. You will no longer need to disconnect the unit to enable HDR content on your TV. However, the headset still needs to be switched off to do this, making it about one-fourth the hassle as it was before.

The new unit coded the CUH-ZVR2, hasn't gotten a release date beyond the announcement, but they've confirmed that the price will remain the same. The packaging will also change, so customers can clearly tell the difference between the old model and the new. Additionally, regardless of the multiple upgrades, all PSVR games will be playable on both models.

The original PSVR launched in October 2016. Sony cut the price by $50 in early 2017, mere months after the release. It's also now available in a bundle with the PlayStation camera. In other virtual reality news, Fallout 4 VR can be gained for free with the purchase of an HTC Vive on PC. Meanwhile, Nintendo isn't interested in VR anytime soon.
