Sony held an event yesterday that revealed the price, release date and some of the products they will be releasing for their new virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR. People have been wondering for a while if they will be able to experience some of their favorite movies and PS4 games with the new piece of tech. Now we finally have some answers.
Every PS4 game and movie can be viewed through PSVR with something Sony is calling "Cinematic Mode". It'll simulate a five meter screen inside a virtual space for you to enjoy your movie or game. Now, don't expect to be viewing your favorite first person game from the eyes of the main character. It'll be as if you're watching a screen in a movie theater, just really up close.
"Users can enjoy content on a virtual screen up to 225 inches (5 meters in width) at a distance of 2.5 meters," Sony said in a press release. "Users will also be able to enjoy 360 degrees photos and videos that are captured by devices such as omnidirectional cameras on PS VR via PS4 Media Player, which will let them feel as if they are physically inside the captured scene."
Better than nothing, right? The current list of games that will feature a full virtual reality experience include Star Wars Battlefront, RIGS Mechanized Combat League, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and many more. There are over 230 developers who are supporting PSVR with over 160 projects currently in development.
PlayStation VR will release in October 2016 for $399 in North America. The standard bundle doesn't include the Move controllers or PlayStation Camera but Sony says a bundle is on the way but didn't give any pricing details.
