Man do I feel slow. While some of us are taking our time, soaking in the sights of Alola and scouring the tall grass for every Pocket Monster, others have apparently bull rushed their way through the game. One such trainer, who goes by the name Nakano, has allegedly become the champion of Alola using only a Magikarp. Nakano posted pictures to their Twitter profile as proof.
Here's the tweet:
Naturally, the tweet has been met with some skepticism, and rightly so. Magikarp is long known for being one of if not the weakest Pokemon in existence, with its main move being Splash, where it flops around doing literally nothing. This Magikarp only knows the move Flail and is equipped with an Everstone that prevents it from evolving into the all-powerful Gyarados. Flail is a Normal-type move, which can't be used against Ghost Pokemon, but when Magikarp ran out of PP on Flail, it would use the move Struggle, which damages the user as well as the enemy and can damage Ghost-types.
Apparently, Nakano would stall and heal Magikarp in tougher battles until the opponent's Pokemon would run out of PP. When that happened, the enemy would use Struggle and gradually beat themselves into submission.
Well, it goes without saying that beating a Pokemon game using only a Magikarp is not necessarily the most fun way to play the game, but Nakano has proven that with enough patience, it can be done.
