Recruit a team of teenagers with attitudes…
The Power Rangers film will make its debut next year and feature a number of new features according to Director Dean Israelite. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he discussed a number of details about the film, including the Rangers' suits and back story.
The film will be based off of the original TV series and the Rangers Jason, Billy, Trini, Kimberly and Zac. Unlike the TV show where the Rangers were friends to begin with, these Rangers will not be so familiar with each other prior to being recruited to battle Rita Repulsa. Israelite stated that the film will be a coming of age story featuring "disenfranchised and desperate" teenagers.
Since the show took place in the 90's, the Rangers' suits weren't really glamorous. This new film has an all new update to make it seem more of an overlay than an actual suit.
“We’ve really pushed ourselves to make them feel different from any other superhero costume that’s out there. One key that’s different to the Power Ranger suits is that they’re not really suits that people get into. They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”
That quote screams CGI and although part and parcel of the times, it's still a little odd to see the original Rangers with CGI powered technology over 20 years later. Israelite went on to speak about the addition of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. Below you can see the first photo of the new Power Rangers cast. From left to right you have R.J. Cyler the Blue Ranger Billy, Naomi Scott Pink Ranger Kim, Ludi Lin Black Ranger Zac, Dacre Montgomery Red Ranger Jason and Becky Gomez Yellow Ranger Trini.
We still have yet to hear anything on Zordon or Alpha 5 and the Command Center, but Power Rangers releases on March 23, 2017
