Prey might actually end up being a more difficult game than you thought

Arkane isn't making Prey a cakewalk

Game Informer is currently running a feature on Arkane Studios' upcoming Action-RPG, Prey and a new video interview that came out today, reveals a more challenging side of the game than many were likely thinking. Lead Designer Ricardo Bare sat down with Game Informer and laid out a lot of the inspirations the team drew upon to craft the game.

While some games, such as System Shock 2 are no surprise considering the game's obvious connection to BioShock's game loop, others were a bit more out of the blue. Who had Dark Souls as an inspiration? I certainly didn't, but apparently it is one of them.

Bare said:

I guess it’s definitely a difficult game. Especially as the game goes on, I expect players will have to change their strategies and experiment a lot when they encounter some of the Typhon creatures. If there’s a spectrum, you could probably describe a game like Dark Souls as pretty hardcore and some of us are big fans of that game. There’s a little bit of splash of that in there, there’s some survival elements and some really hard challenges to overcome.

Dark Souls' reach as a source of inspiration is certainly far and wide, but to this point it has mostly spawned imitators such as Lords of the Fallen or 2-D takes such as Salt and Sanctuary. But taking aspects of the Souls series and applying it to the free reign Metroidvania-style of level design with System Shock/BioShock/Dishonored mechanics is a mix unlike any we've seen to date.

Suffice it to say, my ears just spontaneously combusted as I watched the interview, and has shaped my anticipation for Prey in a whole new light. Prey will be releasing on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in Spring 2017.
