Prodeus is a glorious violent FPS Mix of 90s & modern Doom

Rip and Tear... differently

Two games industry veterans have shared first details about their indie FPS project called Prodeus. The stylish first-person shooter takes clear inspiration of 90s classics like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and more, while featuring all modern niceties gamers have grown accustomed to today. Check out the heart-pounding announcement trailer!

Mike Voeller and Jason Mojica are the two talented men behind Prodeus. While this is an indie project with a rather small team behind it, the two game devs have been active in the games industry for a long while and have a very respectable lineup of previous games under their belt. Genre-defining cult FPS games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, Bioshock: Infinite, Wolfenstein (2009) and many more.

This experience in the FPS genre is what lands Prodeus confidence among the sea of upcoming indie titles. As a self-titled first person shooter of old, reimagined using modern rendering techniques, Prodeus is distinctly focusing on the two things that matter most in shooters. Mechanics and visual feedback.

Undoubtedly, the beautiful mix of retro pixelated aesthetics and cutting-edge shading techniques are a big factor how Prodeus captures the attention of gamers, but reducing the trailer to a mere visual showcase is just unfair.

Once you dig deeper into the footage shown in the trailer, you’ll immediately notice the fast-paced and intuitive mechanics which have seemingly been mostly lost in the past two decades. The ever-growing race towards realism in the FPS genre came at a major cost of freedom and speed. Jumping, strafing, shooting all take their time now, with lengthy animations.

While these are nice and shooters like that have their rightful place, it’s also very nice to see a different take on how FPS games can be done in the 21st century. Even big-budget titles like Doom (2016) and its upcoming sequel Doom Eternal have gone back to the frenetic and satisfying roots of yore.

Prodeus is set to come out next year for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
