Project CARS 2 dev “impressed” by Xbox One X hardware, aiming for 60 FPS

The Project CARS 2 development team has not been shy about their admiration for Microsoft's Xbox One X. They've openly said that if there's anything more they can add to the Xbox One X version, that they would not "won’t hold it back due to [PlayStation 4] Pro.”

While they aren't fully disclosing what exactly that means regarding specs, Slightly Mad Studios' COO Rod Chong said in a recent interview with Gamespot that he was "impressed" by the console. But that the team is currently "benchmarking" Project CARS 2 to figure out its final specs with 60 FPS being a necessity.

He said:

"Unfortunately, I can't tell you that much right now because we are benchmarking as we speak. We are impressed with the hardware but right now we are benchmarking. There will obviously be enhancements, but we are not ready to showcase exactly what those are yet. Other than it must be 60 frames per second or death."

Just last month, Game Director Stephen Viljoen called Xbox One X a "significant" improvement over PS4 Pro, saying that the enhancement sliders would be "higher" due to "better hardware." However, there's been some disparity on the part of the developer as to where exactly Project CARS 2 will fall on the performance spectrum.

While Chong expresses the need for the game to hit 60 FPS, Studio Head Ian Bell has previously said that a pure 4K/60 FPS performance will not be possible on console, even on Xbox One X, describing it as "sub 60 FPS at 4K."

This just means that the game won't be locked at 60 FPS, and will drop frames here and there. Bell said the game should be at 60 FPS most of the time, but the studio will "push the consoles to and beyond their limits for more interesting racing. Even if that means dropping a few frames."

Project CARS 2 releases on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on September 22nd, 2017.
