Project Cars officially cancelled for Wii U

To the surprise of nobody, developer Slightly Mad Studios today confirmed that the Wii U version of Project Cars has been officially cancelled.

In a statement to Nintendo Life, Slightly Mad confirmed that hardware limitations are indeed the reason for the cancellation, noting that the current build of Project Cars “is simply too much for the Wii U.”

The project’s canning follows a long battle with the Wii U’s hardware which ultimately resulted in an unplayable 23FPS, even at 720p. In May, studio head Ian Bell said that 30FPS may be doable on Wii U with “a hell of a lot of work," but that Slightly Mad would move on if it seemed impossible. True to their word, the studio has now elected to wait for Nintendo’s next platform, the Nintendo NX.

Given the recent reveal of the crowd-funded Project Cars 2, however, it’s more likely that the Nintendo NX will get a slice of the sequel if anything. At the time of writing, a release timeframe for Project Cars 2 has not yet been given, and only PS4, Xbox One and PC have been named as platforms.
