PS Plus subscriptions up 90 percent since PS4 launch

In a press release celebrating the sales success of the PlayStation, Sony made note of a 90 percent increase in PlayStation Plus subscriptions following the console's launch in November.

Much of the increase is likely to do with the fact that Sony now requires a PS Plus membership in order to play PS4 games online, but anyone who paid for the service on PS3 will likely admit it's worth the money. In addition to allowing online gameplay for the PS4, PS Plus members get access to the Instant Game Collection, a service that allows players to play the full versions of gaems without a time limit and at no additional cost. For the launch of the PS4, PS Plus members were treated to two free games: Contrast and Resogun. For January 2014, they'll get Don't Starve. Looking ahead, some already confirmed free games through PS Plus include Driveclub and Outlast.

PlayStation Plus also transfers across all PlayStation Platform, so if you own a Vita or  PS3, you get your own set of free games each month as well. For January, PS3 owners get DmC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for PS3, while Vita owners get Worms: Battle As and Smart As.

Today, Sony also noted that over 4.2 million PS4 consoles and more than 9.7 million games have been sold since December 28th.
