Aside from the hype of E3, summer is usually a pretty quiet time for the video game industry. Like its Xbox One brethren, the PlayStation 4 has also been hit by the summer drought, seeing very few games released during the month of July. Though the excitement should pick up again in the fall, there are still a few decent titles worth checking out this month, especially if you haven't already played The Last of Us.
DrinkBox Studios' Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition has been available for the PS3 and Vita since last April, but is just now making its PS4 debut. And in grand fashion too. In addition to including the costume and Infierno DLC, the Super Turbo Championship Edition offers all of the following: more words to the title, an extra save slot, new costumes, creepy hanging dolls, two extra levels, new and improved enemies, another save slot, a new dimension-switching ability called “Shadow Swap,” chicken egg bombs, an NPC with an impossibly large head, and a power called INTENSO.
If you are an Xbox LIVE Gold member and own an Xbox One, I'd suggest waiting until tomorrow because it is one of July's free Games with Gold titles.
Sniper Elite 3 has been available on PC and on consoles in Europe since June. But for those of us in the United States, it'll be released on July 1. Sniper Elite 3 sees American OSS agent Karl Fairburne deep behind Nazi lines, providing crucial sharpshooting skills as the allies battle Germany's Tiger tanks across the Western Desert. Karl soon discovers that he has much more to worry about than the famed Afrika Korps.
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a next-gen remake of PlayStation 1 platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Built from the ground up with "brand new next-gen technology," the remake looks good from the screenshots we've seen so far. I haven't played it, unfortunately, but for a cool $30, it might not be a bad investment during this slow time.
Easily the most anticipated PS4 game of the month, The Last of Us: Remastered is a must buy if you haven't already played the original PS3 version. And even then, I can make the argument that it's worth playing again. Running in full 1080p with what's believed to be 60 frames per second, even Naughty Dog has called it a "transformitive" experience. Other upgrades include higher resolution character models, improved shadows and lighting, and upgraded textures. All previously released DLC, including Left Behind, will also be included with the game.
