PS4 leads console sales in U.S. for August 2015

Four months in a row

Adding on to NPD Group's report on last month's video game sales numbers, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console of August 2015. This marks the fourth month in a row that the PS4 has topped the Xbox One and Wii U, after the Xbox One surprisingly outsold the PS4 in April.

“We would like to thank our fans and partners for their ongoing support of PlayStation and for making PS4 the top-selling console and No. 1 in software sales in North America in August," Sony said in a statement.

While the Xbox One has been outsold again, Microsoft remained in high spirits heading into the holiday season.

"This is going to be an amazing holiday for Xbox fans, and it kicked off in August with the releases of Rare Replay and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the first of seven must-play games coming exclusively to Xbox One this year," Microsoft said. "Coinciding with the release of these highly-rated exclusives and others like Madden NFL 16 and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Xbox One continued to gain momentum in August, with sales in the U.S. up 26 percent over August 2014."

Hardware sales actually delined two percent in August 2015 compared to August 2014, with a "modest dollar growth of three percent" for new consoles. Unfortunately, that was offset by a 61 percent decline in last-gen hardware sales. Interestingly, NPD Group's Liam Callahan noted that hardware bundles are "increasingly becoming the standard way to purchase console hardware." 93 percent of unit sales in August 2015 came from bundles, whereas August 2014 only saw 41 percent.

For the entire month, overall sales across new physical software, hardware, and accessories, declined two percent compared to August 2014.
