PS4 leads U.S. hardware sales in March, Xbox One sells over 300,000 units

During a month that saw both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 get major exclusive releases, it was Sony's PS4 that came out on top. For the third consecutive month, the PS4 outsold all other hardware in the United States, NPD Group reported today. Despite the ongoing rivalry between the PS4 and Xbox One, the two competing systems combined to push U.S. hardware sales in March up 78 percent from 2013, from $222 million to $395 million. And now, five months in, the PS4 and Xbox One are out-performing initial sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

"PS4 and Xbox One continue to see success with cumulative sales of the two consoles through the first five month currently totaling more than double that of their predecessors, the PS3 and Xbox 360," NPD Group's Liam Callahan said.

What's odd about the system sales is that Microsoft's Titanfall was actually the most sold game during the month "with a solid attach rate" to the Xbox One, so you'd think Microsoft's system would've came out on top. Either way, Microsoft seems content with the 311,000 Xbox One units sold in the month.

"We’re also happy to share today that more than 5 million Xbox One consoles have been sold-in to retailers since our launch," said Yusuf Mehdi, Xbox's Corporate VP of Marketing. "The new generation is off to a strong start, with global Xbox One sales outpacing Xbox 360 by more than 60 percent at the same point in time, a true testament to your love of console gaming."

"Of course, we're just getting started with this generation and the months ahead will bring several announcements we think you'll love. The team will continue to deliver regular improvements and new features based on your feedback through frequent system updates …. We can't wait to share more games with you in June at E3."

Sony hasn't revealed specific sales numbers for March, but did announced that worldwide PS4 sales totaled more than 7 million units.
