Sony has released its financial report for the first quarter of the fiscal year, revealing updated sales figures on the PlayStation 4.
In the three month period ending June 30, 2015, Sony sold three million PS4 consoles, meaning life-to-date sales for the PS4 have no surpassed the 25.3 million mark worldwide. The latest figure we heard was 22.3 million back in April 2015, and before that it was 20.2 million in March 2015. Point being, Sony's PS4 has sustained continued success, and even growth, as this quarter's total is actually up from the 2.7 million consoles sold in the same window last year.
Perhaps the most impressive feat is that the PS4 is now outpacing the wildly successful PlayStation 2. It has taken the PS4 less than two years to break the 25 million sales mark, while it took the PS2 two years and eight months just to hit the 20 million units sold.
With sales tracking so well, Sony has actually revised its expectations for the year. Whereas the company originally expected to shift 16 million consoles this financial year, it's now predicting sales of 16.5 million which, if it lives up to expectations, would put the PS4 at 38.8 million units sold by March 31, 2016.
PlayStation Vita sales weren't mentioned in the report, but Sony did note a decrease in PS3 hardware and software sales.
In total, Sony's Game & Network Services Segment, which houses the PlayStation brand, closed the quarter with$2.365 billion in revenue, a 12.1 percent increase over the same period last year.
Overall, Sony, as a whole, had a solid quarter with $676 million in net income from nearly $15 billion in sales. Best news for Sony, the quarter wasn't carried solely on the shoulders of its PlayStation division. Its Devices, Imagery, Financial Services, and Music all earned a higher operating income than Games & Network Services.
