A rumor surfaced last week, suggesting that the PlayStation 4 topped the sales charts in physical sales in the United States for November 2017 despite Microsoft’s release of the Xbox One X. The NPD Group has officially released the hardware sales details for November 2017 and it was definitely an interesting month.
As far as which console was king of November 2017’s sales (physical only, US only), it was the PlayStation 4.
“More units of PlayStation 4 hardware sold in November 2017 than any other month life-to-date,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “PlayStation 4 is the best-selling video game hardware platform year-to-date.”
While the PS4 outsold Xbox One and Nintendo Switch systems, gamers spent more money buying Xbox Ones than they did buying PlayStation 4s or Nintendo Switches. The PS4 sold more, but Microsoft walked away with more money for the month, thanks to the Xbox One X. O top of that, the Xbox One had its best November yet, in terms of November sales since its release in 2013.
Overall, gamers spent more money this November than they did last year, hardware spending for November 2017 went up 52% year-over-year to $1.1 billion.
