PS4 predicted to break 100 million sales in its lifetime

Research firm DFC expects Sony’s PS4 to sell over 100 million units worldwide in its lifetime, which would make it the sixth console to reach the lofty milestone.

Indeed, the 100 million club is a prestigious one. Only five consoles have ever knocked on its sterling gates: Game Boy, PS1, PS2, DS and Wii. PS4, the scarcely dethroned frontrunner for current-gen console sales, stands as good a chance as realistically possible. It was the best-selling console for 2015 and also led game hardware sales for January 2016.

As MCV reports, DFC also believes digital sales will grow considerably over the next three years. By 2019, the firm expects Xbox One and PS4’s combined games revenue to reach $20 billion, and for half of those sales to be digital.

DFC adds that PlayStation VR will likely play a role in the PS4’s success.

“Of course, virtual reality is currently the big news item and its potential impact has been examined,” the firm said. “Sony has the biggest VR play with the PlayStation VR but that is only one of several reasons why the PlayStation 4 is expected to be the leading game system over the next few years.

“VR could actually help the PS4 expand its audience over the next few years but it is currently not crucial to the overall forecasts as DFC is taking a conservative attitude towards the market,” DFC concluded.

Conservative really is the word for virtual reality, though you wouldn’t know it from early prices. HTC’s Vive is asking $800, while Oculus has priced its Rift headset at $600. If PlayStation VR can undercut the two by, say, $150 or more, PS4 could very well become the go-to system for virtual reality.

Thanks, GameSpot.
