PS4 Pro didn’t get 4K Blu-ray player, because you have 4K Netflix and YouTube

Sony took to the PlayStation Meeting to pull back the curtain and reveal the rumored PlayStation 4 Pro. The new system was revealed to feature an upgraded GPU (more than doubled), 4K display, boosted clock rate, and a 1TB HDD.

In addition to that, Sony also revealed that Netflix and YouTube would be getting fully functional 4K apps (something the Netflix CEO hinted at last year, but his timing was totally off). There's something that the PS4 Pro won't feature, though, and it's something that the Xbox One S has: a 4K Blu-ray player.

With such an uproar SIE boss Andrew House sat own with The Guardian (via MCVUK) to explain why. Apparently, it's because console owners prefer Netflix and YouTube to Blu-ray discs.

“Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming,” said House. “Certainly with our user base, it’s the second biggest use case for people’s time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area.”

House went on to add that it will not be possible to add 4K UHD to PS4 Pro through a firmware update.

During the PlayStation Meeting, Sony also revealed gameplay for Mass Effect: Andromeda, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and revealed a slimmed down PS4. The event lead to quite a few members of the community poking fun at Sony.
