PS4 remains top-selling next-gen console in U.S for sixth month in a row

Even with the Xbox One's drop in price, Microsoft's next-gen console failed to outsell the PS4. Following the NPD Group's sales report for video game hardware and software, Sony took to Twitter, via the PlayStation account, to announced that the PS4 was the number one top-selling U.S. next-gen console for June. That's six months in a row for those keeping count.

The news comes just a day after Microsoft boasted that Xbox One sales more than doubled in June, thanks mostly to the release of the Kinect-less model which retails for $399 — the same price as the PS4 and $100 less than the original Xbox One with Kinect. As I noted yesterday though, without revealing any hard numbers it's hard to gauge how much of an effect the newly priced Xbox One had on sales.

Either way, both consoles appear to be selling well as NPD Group reported a 106 percent increase in hardware sales versus June 2013, "lifted entirely by console hardware sales, which were up by over 200 percent."

“Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 – an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation," NPD Group continued.

Total video game sales for June 2013 came in at $736.4 million, a 24 percent increase of the $593.5 million in June 2013. Of this total, $292.7 million were from video game hardware sales.
