PS4’s Spider-Man will focus heavily on Peter Parker, QTE’s will enhance the ‘spectacle’ of set pieces

Now that we've gotten a hefty taste of Spider-Man gameplay courtesy of the Sony E3 presser, questions about how it all works are beginning to pop up. In an interview with IGN, creative director Bryan Intihar broke down some of the nitty gritty details including Spidey's web shooters, but also revealed details about what we can expect from the story and explained why the much maligned Quick Time Events are a part of the game.

Regarding the story, we can expect that the duality of Peter Parker and Spider-Man will play a huge role in the story. Peter will be 23 years old during the time that the game takes place in, so he's very well experienced in handling himself behind the mask, but it's figuring himself out in his everyday existence. Intihar says:

"We don’t want to make him so powerful that you can’t relate to him, because relatability is so important for this character, a sense of vulnerability. Half of his jokes come from that, and we want to make sure we retain that."

One of the best parts about a Spider-Man story is the inevitable crossover that comes with being both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and Intihar says we can expect that to happen quite a bit.

"We talked a lot about what makes the best Spider-Man stories, and it’s when Peter’s world and Spider-Man’s world collide."

He continued:

"This is a story about the man behind the mask as much as the man in it. Expect to see a lot of Peter in this game."

As you might remember, there were several instances of Quick Time Events peppered into the gameplay demo for added dramatic effect. Intihar says we can expect to see this happen "from time to time."

He said:

"The superhero experience isn’t fully there unless you have those big set pieces that only someone like Spider-Man can survive.

For us, that can’t be the game, but you have a sense of spectacle. Sometimes we are going to do things that even break the core of the traversal or the combat. It’s not something we rely on, but it’s something we’re going to use to our advantage.

Swinging around the city, combat, things that you’d expect from the game, that’s all there. But we do use those events from time to time to sell certain moments."

Spider-Man will release on PS4 sometime in 2018.
