PS4 sales hit 20.2 million units worldwide

Continuing on its record-setting pace, Sony announced this week at GDC 2015 that its PlayStation 4 has sold a staggering 20.2 million units worldwide, as of March 1. Keep in mind, this is sold through to consumers, not just units shipped to retailers which makes the number all the more impressive.

The new figure is up a little less than two million units from the 18.5 million PS4s sold at the beginning of January 2015. The PS4 continues to show the "fastest and strongest" growth in the history of all PlayStation hardware, Sony said.

"We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play," President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House said in a statement. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system's deep social capabilities."

By comparison, the latest figure we have from Microsoft was from the end of 2014 in which the company claimed to have shipped (that's to retailers) 10 million Xbox One units. After being outsold by the Xbox One (in the U.S.) during the holidays — thanks, in part, to some very attractive sales on Microsoft's part — the PS4 has seemingly reestablished foothold and shows no sign of slowing sales. With the release of upcoming exclusives like Bloodborne, MLB 15 The Show, and eventually Uncharted 4: A Thieve's End, it's definitely possible that this already staggering sales number will continue to grow at a rapid pace.
