Sony's PlayStation 4 sold through more than 5.7 million units during the 2015 holiday season, bringing the cumulative total to more than 35.9 million units globally as of January 3, 2016, the company announced today. This is up from the 30.2 million at the end of November.
Sony also noted that PS4 software sales "remained strong" during the 2015 holiday season with more than 35 million copies sold in retail stores worldwide and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store.
Note: The holiday season is defined by Sony as November 22, 2015 through January 2, 2016 for North America, Latin America, and Europe. In Japan and Asia, it's November 23, 2015 through January 3, 2016.
Additionally, PlayStation Plus subscriptions are up. 60 percent more users subscribed to Sony's PS Plus service at the end of 2015 compared to the same period the previous year. PlayStation Plus isn't necessarily a new service, as it was also available during the PlayStation 3's lifespan; however, the PS4 requires you have a PS Plus membership to play games online. Of course, the service comes with other perks, including access to Sony's "Instant Game Collection," which allows members to play full versions of games with no time limits or extra costs.
“We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year.”
