PS4 System Software Update 5.0 details leak

Sony announced an upcoming system software update for the PlayStation 4, Update 5.0, around mid-July. The reveal came accompanied with registration to beta test the coming update, but no details on what the update would contain.

According to Update 5.0's leaked detailed (obtained by Eurogamer) the highly anticipated system software update will not bring the ability to change PSN IDs, something PlayStation users have been clamoring for with each update.

Here's what's coming to the PS4 in Update 5.0, according to the leaked documents (it should be noted that any leak should be taken with a grain of salt, as there might be inaccurate details or things missing altogether):

Overhaul to Master/Sub Account System

There will be an expanded range of options for those with sub/child accounts on their consoles. Family accounts will now be able to feature multiple adult accounts, which can act as a parent/guardian role and set parental controls on a per-account basis. This will allow each sub/child account to have different communication, content-viewing and spending limit privileges.

Requests can also be sent to adult accounts on other PS4s to join the same family.

Additionally, a new web app will help the management parental/family controllers and option from you PC and smartphone.

Follow Users

PlayStation owners will be able to follow anyone's account. Previously, this feature was limited to verified accounts (like video game influencers, developers or games) but the feature is broadening to include all users, regardless of whether they have confirmed your friend request or meeting your friend limit. This change is coming with the goal of encouraging "more sharing of content and more interactions".

You will be able to choose if you only want existing friends or anybody to follow you. You can block users, too.

Notifications to the PS4's Quick Menu

System notification will be visible on the Quick Menu, which will omit the need to return to the PS4 Home screen to check on notifications. The Quick Menu will also detail the status of game downloads/uploads.

Push notifications will also make their way to the Quick Menu.

Twitch Streaming at 1080p 60fps

Limited to PS4 PRo owners, Twitch streaming will be available at 1080p 60fps.

Various Other Changes

  • Support for bundle and compilations discs, as well as discs which support games and add-ons.
  • Overhauled PlayStation App with better performance and design.
