PS4 System Update 4.50 Adds External HDD Support and More

See what's new for the PlayStation 4 4.50 update.

Those selected for the PlayStation beta program will get a look at the new features coming to PlayStation 4 today. The new software update 4.50 is a pretty big update that encompasses a lot of new features. If signed up for the beta, it can be accessed through a received email with instructions.

For those who aren't participating, luckily GameZone has you covered. Here's a run down of what we can expected with PlayStation software update 4.50.

External HDD Support

This was surprisingly not already a feature. The Xbox One and even the Wii U have external hard drive support, but not PlayStation 4 joins the fray. With this update, any USB 3.0 HDD can be used as a storage device for your PS4.

The only catch is that the HDD used cannot exceed 8TB in size.

Custom Wallpapers

Update 4.50 also adds custom wallpapers for the PS4 home screen. Set your favorite in-game screenshots as a background image. You can even alter the image slightly with drop shadows on text and dimmers.

Quick Menu Refresh

In the last PS4 software update, Quick Menus were overhauled. This update brings additional improvements to that change. Now the Quick Menu takes up less screen space, and party features will be more readily accessable. Creating parties, inviting friends and also joining parties will be easier.

This new change is to keep the action going without having to filter through menus as much.

Simplified Notification List

Notifications have been made much easier. Instead of having small details under different tabs, they've now condensed them into one list with easily identified icons to show what they are.

You can also now customize what pop-up notifications actually pop up for you. No more being told something you already know for the hundredth time.

PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

Post directly to the Activity Feed. This is very similar to the notifications on the Wii U home screen. Comments, posts, screenshots and gifs posted directly to the Activity Feed, which now shows in multiple places.

3d Blu-Rays on Playstation VR

Perhaps the biggest thing for this update: 3D movies on a Playstation VR. Stereoscopic 3D directly through your PlayStation VR headset.

This is just the beta, so more info on the update is bound to come, so keep on the lookout for more news and an official release!
