PS5 offers Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, Apple TV, and more at launch

Are you not entertained?

Sony detailed the media capabilities for the PlayStation 5. In the new post on the official PlayStation Blog, we learn that the PS5 will deliver the entire entertainment package from Day 1.

The days of game consoles doing one thing and one thing only are over. It all started with the venerable PS2 that became the media hub in most households with the inclusion of a DVD player. But it was the following generation that allowed media apps like Netflix to truly transform what a console could be.

We know that for many of you, your PlayStation console doesn’t get shut off when you’re done playing games. Entertainment like movies, TV shows, music, and gaming livestreams only add to the PlayStation experience.

So, it’s no surprise that the next-gen PS5 is continuing this trend. While some consoles lacked on the entertainment front at launch, Sony is promising a full experience this time. The PlayStation 5 will offer many of the most popular streaming services right at launch. These are the services that are confirmed:

  • Apple TV
  • Disney+
  • Netflix
  • Spotify
  • Twitch
  • YouTube

It’s a solid offering that covers some of the biggest services. But this is just the start. Other notable entertainment apps like Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more will follow in the near future.

Previously, we got a first look at the PS5 user interface. Back then, Sony showcased how gaming and media are distinctly separated in the new UI. These ‘Spaces’ will go a long way in clearing up the clutter between the various types of apps and games, no doubt.

As is tradition, a new Media Remote for the PS5 will also be available at launch. It’s a fairly traditional little remote but the dedicated buttons for Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube stick out.
