PSA: Last chance to grab The Witcher 2 for free on Xbox

Last month, as part of a new batch of Xbox One backward compatible games, Microsoft announced The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings would be free to download for all Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners.

Although originally released on Xbox 360, Microsoft's new backward compatibility feature means you can enjoy it on Xbox One with all of the system's features and perks included.

But today is your last day to take advantage of the free giveaway, so get a move on.

On a related note, Microsoft last month also announced a change in the way they handle backward compatible releases. Rather than waiting until a set monthly launch date to reveal and release a fresh batch of titles, Microsoft will instead release backward compatible games as they become ready and available.

"What this means for you is that you won’t have to wait to find out the latest titles; we’ll release whatever is available, when they’re available, once each title has received the engineering and publisher stamp of approval," Larry Hryb said.

Backward compatibility functionality arrived on the Xbox One back in November alongside the New Xbox One Experience. 104 Xbox 360 games were initially made available for free, with 16 additional titels added in December, including Fable III and Halo: Reach.

Of course, there's still a huge backlog of Xbox 360 games, Xbox One system owners want to play on their new console. The top-five most requested games are Call of Duty: Black Ops II (141,048 votes), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (128,444) votes, Red Dead Redemption (123,264 votes), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2(113,175 votes), and Call of Duty: Black Ops (94,630). Of the top five games mentioned, only Black Ops has been officially announced as an upcoming title for Xbox One backward compatibility.
