Psyonix has revealed that Hollywood has approached them an pitched ideas for movies and TV shows based on their popular car-sports game, Rocket League. On top of movie and TV show pitches, Psyonix has been approached with ideas for Rocket League toys.
“We've had discussions with various people and studios in Hollywood about making movies based on Rocket League, or a TV show,” Jeremy Dunham, the vice president of marketing and communications at Psyonix said in a discussion with MCV.
“We've had people come our way with possible toy deals and lots of cross-promotions outside of our game, some of which we have already done. Now we are getting to the point where the people who want to work with us are much much more famous."
Nothing is official as of yet, Psyonix has yet to commit to any TV or movie deals. The reason for their lack of commitment is founded in their need to know exactly how Rocket League could tie into a film or TV show.
"TV series and films are being pitched to us. There's nothing to announce, there's nothing official, we haven't signed any dotted lines," explained Dunham. "A big reason for that is there are lot of questions about Rocket League in general, about the fiction, the lore and how that would tie into a television show or film."
Somehow, the open-world building game known as Minecraft got a point-and-click story game, so it's not even a stretch to see a rocket powered car soccer game getting a movie or TV show. It's funny though, to see Psyonix approached with film deals, meanwhile we have huge RPGs that have devoted storylines that are begging to be films – like say, The Last of Us (which just made the news today with a possible sequel).
