Rocket League is one of those rare games that manages to stick long after its release. This is in large part because many developers aren't interested in maintaining a game long after it releases, which can also be attributed to the decreasing attention spans of gamers everywhere. Psyonix, however, is trying to buck that trend and says that they will continue to support Rocket League for the long haul if players continue to play it.
In speaking to Kinda Funny Games, Psyonix's VP Jeremy Dunham explained that the studio has no interest in creating a sequel at the moment, and references the community they have built up which is still growing, as a defining factor.
He said:
"Our goal was to keep making Rocket League better and better so that we don't lose any of the people that want to play. If they're playing our game, we're not going to penalize them and make them buy our game again just because we want to add a couple new features. We want to let them know we're in it for the long haul, if they're in it for the long haul."
As fluffy and PR friendly as the notion of "we don't want to have you pay more money" sounds, there is some legitimate logic here. So long as the players are willing to play the game and invest in its microtransactions, Psyonix can support themselves well enough not to need a sequel. The developer's investments in their own game are actually turning into a profit, and gamers don't need to invest more than once.
In other words, it's a win-win.
