Quake-inspired shooter WRATH: Aeon of Ruin out now on Early Access

The glorious FPS renaissance continues

3D Realms is celebrating the release of their new retro-throwback first-person shooter WRATH: Aeon of Ruin. The shooter is now available on Steam as an Early Access title for just $23.74. Check out the release trailer here!

The FPS genre has been living a return to its glory days in recent years. The exciting industry trend is both due to indie developers who deliver the same simple-yet-satisfying fast-paced experience of genre-defining titles like the original Doom and Quake, but also by big publishers returning their juggernaut franchises to former glory as Bethesda did with Doom (2016). It’s an awesome development in the genre for FPS fans who yearn for simpler, more focused game design.

You are Outlander. Once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, you now find yourself on the shores of a dying world. From the consuming darkness emerges a figure cloaked in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, who burdens you with the task of hunting down the remaining Guardians of the Old World. You must journey into the vast gloom to explore ancient ruins, discover forgotten secrets and battle the horrors that lurk within.

Earlier this year, veterans of retro shooters 3D Realms unveiled WRATH: Aeon of Ruin. Unlike other retro-inspired shooters, Aeon of Ruin is decidedly leaning to the Quake lineage of dark, gothic and horror elements. The faux-rudimentary 3D visuals only reinforce it. It looks stunning on all fronts and will make you wonder what a small-scale game can be when developers maximize the use of aesthetics over raw fidelity. No wonder, since actual Quake-tech is powering the game with Quake modders on the team. It’s the next best thing to a spiritual successor to the Quake games.

Now, that WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is offering a hub world with 2 levels, but the developer has shared the development roadmap which promises steady content updates in form of new levels, enemies, weapons and more.
