R4 Cards are Officially Illegal in the UK

In what happens to qualify for non-surprising news of the day, Nintendo’s victory in the High Court in London is one of the latest victories for publishers versus pirates; an ongoing bloodbath that won’t stop any time soon. Ruled that the “R4” flash cartridges are a violation of Nintendo’s rights and the DS, it is now illegal to import, sell, or advertise in the UK.

Although it does come at the tail-end of the DS life cycle, and thus can only minimize already dwindling sales, it’s still promising to see companies take steps towards combating the issue and being pro-active rather than just re-active. “It’s a bad [thing] to do,” the court ruled as the card violated Nintendo’s handheld security and was a violation of property.

“Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival.” As someone who works on independent games in his free time, all I have to say is….it’s about damn time.
