Brooklyn, Illinois-based game curator Galloping Ghost Arcade recently unearthed an exceedingly rare Beavis and Butt-Head arcade game originally released in the mid-90s.
Galloping Ghost’s machine is the ninth unit of a 12-count line of prototypes produced by Atari in 1996, the year the Beavis and Butt-Head animated series premiered. Documentation included with the machine shows it was originally sold at an MTV auction in 1999, two years after Beavis and Butt-Head ended.
Bringing the machine back to life was no easy task. To repair the game’s archaic, 3DO innards, Galloping Ghost purchased another 3DO system to scrap for parts. After some hefty salvaging and cable wizardry, the old box whirred to life with an original game disc at its core. A second disc, which Galloping Ghost believes to be a collection of B&B minigames, was also found but has not yet been tested.
Galloping Ghost’s machine is probably the only publicly available Beavis and Butt-Head arcade game in the world. Precious few machines are even known, and the others that have been found are privately owned.
Retro gaming and arcade enthusiasts near Brooklyn can find Galloping Ghost Arcade at 9415 Ogden Avenue, Brookylin, IL 60513. Additional details are available on the arcade’s website.
