Rare’s brilliant pirate sandbox Sea of Thieves is now available on Steam

Sea of Thieves, one of the generation’s highlights from the Xbox Games Studios first-party line-up has launched today on Steam for PC. Previously only available via the Microsoft Store, the open-world pirate sandbox can now be played on the PC’s most popular gaming client.

Xbox fans had a rough time this console generation. The infamously horrible launch of the Xbox One and the misguided strategy with it lead to several fumbled early years. And it was the exclusive games that suffered the most. But one Xbox studio was creating something very special behind closed doors. It was Rare, the legendary British developer who unleashed one of the best Xbox exclusives and one of the best games of the past decade with Sea of Thieves.

Explore a vast open world filled with unspoiled islands, sunken ships and mysterious artefacts. Take on quests to hunt for lost treasure, seek out cursed Skeleton Captains or gather valuable cargo for the Trading Companies. Go hunting and fishing or choose from hundreds of optional goals and side-quests.

The multiplayer pirate game made a big splash (pun intended) on the gaming scene with its jolly style and an exceptional sense of living out the pirate fantasy. Rare and Microsoft only increased a great game with steady content updates. But the game was somewhat hindered on the PC by virtue of being bound to the Microsoft Store. Not really a popular venue for PC gamers.

Thankfully, things have long changed for the better after Phil Spencer steered the direction of Xbox into a much more open direction. Almost all games have been brought over to Steam where a much larger player base has been enjoying the first-party titles by team green. Now, Sea of Thieves is also there and can be had for just $39.99. A steal for one of the best co-op games out there at the moment.

Our eyes now are firmly on the Forza and Forza Horizon series which has yet to make the jump on Steam.
