Reaction to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 mostly positive, research firm reveals

Comparisons made to Deus Ex, Titanfall, and Advanced Warfare

Last week, Activision officially unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. While leaked information and details had revealed the game would be set in a dark and gritty future, and likely contain elements similar to that of Advanced Warfare’s exosuit, the official reveal gave us our first glimpse at the highly anticipated game.

So how did the gaming public react? Surprisingly, mostly positive, data gathered by research firm Fizziology reveals.

For those unfamiliar, Fizziology is “consultative social media research company“ that uses data and information gathered on social media to help companies make more informed decisions based on real-time reactions of their audience. In the past, they’ve broken down social media buzz surrounding key products in the gaming industry, including the Xbox One (twice), Grand Theft Auto V, and PlayStation 4.

With so many seemingly on the fence about the direction Treyarch is going with Black Ops 3, we asked Fizziology to breakdown the overall reaction to the new Call of Duty’s reveal.

What they found was that 49 percent of the reaction to Black Ops 3’s reveal was “positive”. 17 percent was “negative,” while 7 percent had “mixed” feelings. I’ll admit, I would probably be part of that mixed group, as I was initially disappointed with the advanced technology, but like some of the gameplay elements they’re including, like co-op campaign. 27 percent were “neutral,” which I guess means they have no thoughts on Call of Duty. I’ll consider them the sheep that’ll get the new one regardless.

Research also found that 14 percent of the “organic” conversation on Twitter were comparisons to other popular games, such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Titanfall, Destiny, and even its predecessor, Advanced Warfare. Most of these comparisons were “negative,” as many people view Black Ops 3 as “a rip-off or rehash of what’s already been done in many popular games before it.” Again, I’m definitely part of this group, and I stand by my comparison.

Gamers were even mixed on Treyarch, with fans split as to crediting the studio to be the creators of “some of the best Call of Duty games” and “the worst titles in the franchise.”

As for Zombies, a mode made famous by Treyarch which is now a staple in Call of Duty games, many are excited for what Black Ops 3 has in store for it. Unfortunately, there was no information regarding specific reaction to the campaign or multiplayer.

Again, most of this reaction is based off of a single gameplay trailer that really didn’t offer too much in terms of specifics. I’m sure as we get closer to the November 6th release of Black Ops 3, opinions will change quite a bit. The question is, will it be for the better or worse?
