Recycled Xbox Gamertags to release over next 24-hours

Earlier this week Microsoft revealed that they would be releasing Xbox Gamertags from the Xbox era to anyone with an active Xbox Live Gold subscription and at least one year of cumulative Xbox Live Gold tenure.

Over the next 24-hours, starting at 2PM ET/ 11AM PT today, the legacy Gamertags that have been squatted on by inactive Xbox users will be made available. If you have never changed your Gamertag since Microsoft stuck you with one, you won't have to pay a dime to change your Gamertag.

Unfortunately, if you chose your own Gamertag… You'll have to pay a fee to change it. When 2PM ET hits and you want to change your Gamertag, head here.

A number of Gamertags will be available from the following categories:

  • Proper Names
  • Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
  • Types of Food
  • Geography and Travel
  • Science and Technology
  • Math and Numbers
  • Animals
  • Some of the greatest inventions of all time
