Rockstar’s Wild West smash hit Red Dead Redemption 2 is already available on PC via the developer’s own Rockstar Games Launcher (RGL) and the Epic Games Store (EGS). Today, we finally get the concrete release date for the Steam version of the game, which is next week, December 5th. You can wishlist RDR2 on Steam right now!
The PC gaming scene has changed drastically in the past year and not all was for the right reasons. Exclusivity among games has been a mainstay since the inception of the medium basically, but the PC platform mainly was excluded in the form of console-only games. After Valve established Steam as the de facto place to game on PC, only a few large publishers, like EA or Blizzard, even attempted to exclusively offer their titles through their own stores.
For the first time since Steam came out, we are now seeing a formidable fight for PC supremacy with the Epic Games Store. Epic has been closing timed-exclusivity deals with a wide range of publishers and indies. The latest among being Red Dead Redemption 2. The long-awaited PC port of the excellent open-world action-adventure didn’t come out on Steam when it launched earlier this month on RGL and EGS. In that sense, we’re really talking about Excludidty rather than Exclusivity. Nonetheless, the deal by Epic for RDR2 seemed especially pitiful since it is only one month, rather than the usual 12 months. PC gamers haven’t really been welcoming for how Epic went on to gain market share on the PC, whether it’s taking the choice away from customers of where to play or the lackluster features of the Epic Games Store.
I really enjoyed my time with RDR2 on PC and think it is the best way to experience it. With Rockstar also making good use of the one-month period by releasing substantial patches, the Steam release looks to be the perfect time to jump in. Sometimes, the wait is worth it.
