Red Dead Redemption mod for GTA V gets shut down by Take-Two

On Friday, a trailer for a Grand Theft Auto V mod was released. This wasn't just any old mod, it was putting Red Dead Redemption into the PC version of GTA V. For those unaware, Rockstar's critically acclaimed western game never made its way to the PC for whatever reason. Many assumed it was because Red Dead Redemption had a troubled development on Xbox 360 and PS3, so Rockstar didn't want to deal with porting it over to the PC.

So, a group of fans decided to spend the last two years of their lives working on a mod that would put that legendary game on the PC through Grand Theft Auto V. The plan was ambitious and the hardcore fans were clearly devoted to making the best possible mod they could.

Take-Two, Rockstar Games' parent company, was not happy about this. Take-Two immediately ordered that the modding team known as .White cease development on the mod and remove the trailer off of the internet.

.White's lead programmer gave the following statement in a forum post.

“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted, and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So thanks guys, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry.”

The mod known as Red Dead Redemption V was supposed to go into public beta this summer but that will no longer happen. It's entirely possible that Rockstar Games is making a PC port of Red Dead Redemption to release prior to Red Dead Redemption 2, but that's purely speculation.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will release on Xbox One and PS4 later this year but no PC version has been announced. Rockstar tends to release PC ports of their games a while after the console versions, usually with some extra features, but it's hard to say if they'll do that with Red Dead Redemption 2.
